My students are always asking how can I achieve a shallow depth of field. Well here is one answer... A great every day lens to buy that isn't too expensive, isn't too heavy and gives great results is a 50mm 1.4
The shallow depth of field you can get with a 1.4 aperture is beautiful and the ability to take photos in low light is such a plus.

Cherry Blossoms
